scale is a bio-art audience-interactive installation that involves electric fish from the Amazon River Basin. Twelve different species of these fish comprise a ‘choir’ whose electrical fields are translated into sound and thus provide the source tones for an immersive audiovisual environment.

The project is a collaboration between the new media collaborative localStyle (co-founded by Jay Alan Yim and Marlena Novak) and neuromechanical engineer Malcolm MacIver, and was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts, University Research Council, and the Murphy Society. We hope to foster wider public awareness of their valuable attributes and the fragility of their natural environment via this interspecies artwork.

In November 2010, the STRP Festival — one of the largest art & technology festival venues in Europe — presented the world premiere. Located in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, STRP stands for Strijp-S, the name of the industrial site where Philips invented such items as the audio cassette and the CD.

From there, the work was curated into the TransLife Triennial Exhibition: Sensorium of the Extraordinary, at the National Art Museum of China, travelling to Beijing in July 2011, where an audience of thousands had the opportunity to try their hands at being a DJ with a chorus of electric fish.

An arc of custom-built aluminum stands houses our Amazonian choristers in individual tanks, comfortably maintained with a sophisticated filtration and water conditioning system, and outfitted with 12 separate audio channels. Customized software and a touchscreen panel allow participants to produce a dynamic mix in real time, combining unadulterated tones with digitally processed effects. Arrays of LEDs under each tank provide visual feedback corresponding to the volume levels of each fish.  The New York Times wrote this recent review of TransLife.
